Part 4: Heatmaps & Session recordings

Tips

As with any data collection, there is no point in gathering all the data you can just because. That will be overwhelming to analyze, and it won’t give you better results. What you should do instead is first determine what it is that you need to know, and then how you can get that information.

However, this can be easier said than done, especially if you are new to data analysis. Here are some questions that can help you to pinpoint where you need heatmaps and session recordings.

  • Are you working on any specific projects at the moment?
  • Do you have any known problem areas on the website?
  • Do you have pages which have not been updated in a long time?
  • Are you not getting as many sales as you would like?

Questions heatmaps and session recordings can answer are:

  • How are the visitors using specific pages?
  • Are the visitors using the menu?
  • Are the visitors using links or buttons?
  • How much of the pages are they viewing?
  • Are they reading the entire article?

And so on.

A good rule for heatmaps and session recordings is that they should provide information that you need. Not just information. Therefore, select the pages or sections that you are working on now, and as you move on to other areas of the website, you create new heatmaps and session recordings to reflect that.
