Part 6: Combining modules

Advanced segments

The advanced segments are segments that span across modules, and there are two different ways of creating them. The first is to create a survey segment based on analytics data, and the second is to move a survey segment over to your analytics, as well as heatmaps and session recordings.

Both of these advanced segments require that you create survey segment, and the basics are explained in part 5. Here, we’ll only show you the additional settings needed.

Creating survey segments with analytics data

Most of the filter options for survey segments are based on survey data only, but under “Website interactions”, you will have more options if you are also collecting analytics data.

Without analytics, you will be able to select response page, but with analytics, you can also filter by channel…

…visited pages (not limited to the page where they answered the survey, but also all other pages viewed in the same visit)…

…and events and goals.

You are also able to combine survey and analytics filters. For example, you may be interested in potential customers (role question) that came from a campaign (channel).

As for all survey segments, select the filters and give the segment a name, and it’s ready to be used.

Moving survey segments to analytics or heatmaps & session recordings

Apart from using analytics data to filter your survey responses, you can also use the survey responses to filter your analytics data. For example, you may want to know how your job seekers are using the website. Or you want to see the heatmaps or session recordings for those that struggled to find what they were looking for.

When you create or edit a segment, check the box to share the segment.

This will make the segment visible to all users in your account, but only you will be able to edit the segment.

To move the segment, you also need to check the new box that says “Available in analytics”.

Next, choose the website. If you have more than one website, note that you must select the one that has the survey.

Lastly, select a segment slot. It doesn’t really matter which one you choose, but if the other slots created are being used by other segments, selecting one of those slots will mean that you replace the current segment with the new segment.

Save the segment settings, and you are ready to move on to “Analytics” or “Heatmaps & Session recordings”.

To use the new segment, open the segment selector. Under “Shared with you”, you will find the survey segments that have been made available in analytics.

The survey segments are ready to be used as you would use the regular analytics segments. The only difference is that you edit the survey segments under “UX-Surveys” instead.

The advanced segments are one way of combining the modules, but there is one more way. Let’s move on to the multidimensional funnels.
